the xmas Nifty 50 Challenge……

I set myself a challenge this Christmas of only using the Nifty Fifty (Canon 50mm F1.8) prime lens. I thought it’d make me think harder about composition and framing as well as lighting. I’m not sure whether it was down to the unwillingness of my models, too much to eat or more likely too much wine but as challenges go, the end results weren’t that spectacular. Plenty of snaps for the family albums and the kids scrapbooks, resplendent with accompanying memories but precious few ‘real’ photographs.

Messing about with the tubes again

November – Right. Crappy weather busy at work and aside from the Football I don’t think I’ve taken a photo for fun for months.
Someone on the talkphotography forums had asked a few questions about Kenko Tubes so I dragged mine out of the bag and had a play….
Nothing special but not a bad result for 10 minutes titting about. The one with the flash underneath will be interesting to play with and try to recover some of the stamen detail…..

QR codes – The quickest way to access long url’s on your mobile?

Will you scan this? Where will it take you.
Just wondering today whether there’s any real value in QR (quick response) codes for anything other than marketing surveys etc.

If you have a ‘smart-phone’ and are curious to see where this one will lead, I dare you to open your bar code scanner and take the plunge.

Well, strictly speaking the moons the same colour as it always is, but instead of beingh dark and night timey, I took this during the day during a rare patch of blue sky.

Hand-held, 200mm – What can I say. Definitely saving up for a 1.4 converter for this lens !!

Great British Summer (or looks like rain dear)

The newly formed team got together for their first friendly this weekend, playing against their older peers at the club.
True to form, the Great British Summer is truly upon us and although the sun was shining the clouds looked more than a little ominous….

Took a hell of a lot longer to stitch these than I thought it would and by no means a proper job. Learnt a few hard lessons on the way to the end result here, the most important of which would be – DON’T MOVE THE CAMERA AT ALL when shooting with this in mind.
Also learnt a lot about masking and layers in Photoshop so not all a total loss. Will be replacing this one with a more considered and better edit as soon as I have a few hours spare !!!

Needless to say that come the finish the socks were consigned to the dustbin

Grasshopper – No Grass

Was sat out in the garden having a fag and a coffee when this chap hopped up onto the table. I didn’t expect it to still be there by the time I’d gone indoors and attached the kenko tubes to the 70-200 but he didn’t seem to be in any great rush to get back into the grass.
Grass would have made a better background but I’m not complaining too much. Took a few shots at a variety of settings, finding that f9 -f11 almost gave me enough DOF to keep it relatively sharp. Had to up the ISO to 800 to be able to hand hold and shoot. If I’d had the tripod handy I may have been able to take more shots and stack them all together but wasn’t sure how long it’d hang around for !!

Don’t think this was the same one from the weekend as that one never had the coloured armour behind it’s head. Somehow it seems that the garden at Canvey Castle here is becoming a bit of a nature reserve. If anyone could Identify what make and model of grasshopper this is I’d be quite interested to hear from you.

Annoying Noisy thing….

These litt;e things are really annoying when you’re trying to relax, in the sun in your garden. Can hear them all over the place but never see where they are. This one ended up jumping onto a sunbed and obligingly sat there till I got the camera out.

For the armchair sportsman such as myself, it’s always a struggle to try and find something that mixes Drinking, Sunshine and sport (aside from spectating cricket). So, I’ve invented outdoor darts. It’s like real darts but the board blows in the wind, and sometimes the numbers are in unusual places……..
