Yesterday, I was ‘lucky’ enough to spend a couple of hours on the shoulder of the M25 waiting for a recovery truck. Naturally, it was a pretty tedious wait, and naturally, I had my camera with me.
Unfortunately I never had the tripod, though in fairness, with the traffic thundering past at 70mph plus I doubt it would have helped. So, from the safety of the car, with breath held I took my first ever light trail photos. Not technically perfect (there’s a lot of motion wobble but nevertheless still not a total disaster.
Had a play with the TriggerTrap Mobile app on the way home from work last night. Haven’t played with it for a while and it’s a lot more stable than it used to be now, having suffered just one crash (of the application) on the whole trip. This I suspect was caused mostly by me covering 50m quicker than the iPhone could cope with taking and saving a photo.
Triggertrap was set to Distance Lapse rather than time lapse, triggering a capture every 50m or so. In practice, some images were captured well within 50m of the previous one and some were considerably further apart. Again, I don’t think this is a Triggertrap issue, more down to the phone, and Location services being able to keep up with the speed of change.
Anyhow, I managed an impressive 978 shots before the battery died, some 5 miles short of home. Assembled at 10 fps, the resultant video looks like this. I did originally have a Kasabian track as the background – it worked well to give a sense of frenzied drive around the M25. Unfortunately YouTube didn’t like it for copyright reasons so I swapped it out for something royalty free. It really changes the whole tone of the film though (have a look at the Flickr version for the original soundtrack).
Quite a poor showing this week. Certainly not a lack of insopiration but more a lack of opportunity. Quite embarrased to even have taken these ones (The iphone is a camera too right?) but kind of sums up the week really.
If I can’t get anything tomorrow then one of these will have to do, which will be disappointing to say the least. Already got some ideas for fast. Hopefully I’ll find the time to make them happen….
Not taken many photos at all lately – far too busy for that with all the exciting things going on at the moment. I did however get another chance to mess about with time-lapse animation using the TriggerTrap mobile application and the iPhone whilst in the car on the way home from work.
Still waiting on my cable/dongle combination so I can start using this thing on the proper camera.
More information on the mobile app can be found on the TriggerTrap website…
Stuck on the M25 (again) the other morning, with the camera at the ready to capture a field full of corn I always get stuck in traffic next to. The spring sunshine looks great on the corn and wind turbine in the middle of it, and It’s a shot I’ve been trying to get for weeks. A few miles before the cornfield, is this bridge and I was struck by how much more interesting things look with some decent light.
Thousands of people drive past this every day, and most of them probably take no notice of it whatsoever
What about the cornfield? – The traffic stopped at the perfect spot to capture exactly the image in my mind’s eye. The only problem was that some bastard had been out in the combine harvester over the weekend, and all I had was a field full of stubble…. Ah well, there’s always next year….
