OK, had 20 minutes to kill and couldn’t think of anything constructive to do. Not that often I get an empty house and ponce again I failed to capitalise on it. One day I might grow up a bit !!

Underlining the theory and well known saying “You can’t polish a turd” is this one off and mostly unremarkable shot. It was by no means a keeper to start with and is probably less aesthetic now than it was before I took the sledgehammer to nut approach with the processing. The only reason it’s made it this far is because I haven’t updated this for a couple of weeks and this is all I have to show for the break. Taken in my ‘office’, this was part of a set, messing around and experimenting with different apertures and shutter speeds. Lit only by the screen of the Mac, this was originally a reasonably well exposed but otherwise slightly out of focus, bland ‘snap’ of my wrinkly, pockmarked and saggy face. Let it now serve as a warning to avid experimenters…(though in my defense I looked considerably better before I started messing about).

She Who Must Be Obeyed has been away but due back tomorrow. Thought it would be prudent to get some extra help in to make sure the housework was finished in time and the house is spick and span. Not too sure about two of them though, they just sat around doing nothing…..

Planet Canvey – An Island in space

It’s often been said that us Canvey Island residents are on another planet, so I had a bit of a play with a fairly crappy image of the Shell Haven complex taken from the newly opened West Canvey Marsh. A little bit of a play in Photoshop with the distort filter created our very own Planet Canvey.

For Comparison, below is the original. A fairly uninspiring shot taken on an overcast and grey day.

It’s been a while since I posted any pictures of me, or indeed pictures with me in them. This is partly because I’m usually the other side of the camera, and partly because I’m such an ugly barsteward. I’ve been thinking about a shot like this for ages, and today, finally got round to having a play. The edit was a quick and dirty one as a proof of concept, but I’m quite pleased with the way it turned out under the circumstances.
Set up wise it’s fairly straightforward all you need really is a tripod, but in this case I also used a Speedlight 430EX.
Settings should be manual, this helps to ensure that the exposure is the same for each shot which in turn makes it easier to blend post production. (fortunately it’s a grey day so didn’t need to worry about changes in ambient light as the sun went in and out).
To take the pictures, I set the camera on timer, pressed the button and adopted my poses. OK, was a bit of running about, but hey, I need the excercise.
Once taken the three pictures were imported into Adobe RAW, and all given the same, desaturated treatment.
Then, I opened them all in photoshop, and copied two as new layers into the third one.
Thereafter, it was simply a matter of using the eraser tool to remove the bits I didn’t want and reveal the “me” underneath.
Job done.

Was all good fun, and I managed to convince the kids that my brothers had popped round while they were at school. Confused the hell out of them as they know that I have no brothers.
